 The Grants Writer will be accountable for fundraising and overall grant oversight under the direction of the Director of Development. The Grant Writer will serve as the clearinghouse and project manager for all grant proposals and awards and will also work closely with program staff across all departments and finance department staff in order to prepare and submit grant proposals. If a grant is awarded, the Grant Writer will be responsible for collecting and tracking grant documents and circulating those to departments involved.


  • Oversee all aspects of grant proposal development (for government, foundation and corporate grants), including conceptualization, budgeting, writing, editing, managing deadlines and project management for the team, etc.
  • Oversee the clearinghouse for grant proposals agency-wide, tracking grant proposal submissions and responses using Bloomerang and internal databases.
  • Ensure that grant proposals move expeditiously through the proposal development process, focusing on timeliness, quality, consistency, and compliance of grants processing.
  • Provide project management for the grant writing process and team of stakeholders, such as program staff, finance, and HR to create strong proposals.
  • Research new grant opportunities that fit with current programmatic funding needs.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of methods and systems to assess the impact of grants and funded programs.
  • Supervise interns or volunteers related to grants projects, as appropriate.
  • Maintain and strengthen working relationships with funders, program staff, community groups, and organizations.
  • Build strong relationships with program staff.  Develop solid understanding of the work of the supported program, its strategies, and how specific grants fit into its framework.
  • Other duties and related projects as assigned.


  • Knowledge of community-based grant making, community issues, and/or nonprofit capacity building.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Business, Communications, Public Health or other relevant fields or equivalent experience.
  • Strong written communication skills, along with highly effective oral communications and engaging presentation skills; 2+ years professional writing experience preferred.
  • Strong project management skills to lead a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail oriented and organized. Can prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills and creative problem-solving ability.
  • Strong governmental and technical grant writing experience.
  • Strong diplomatic, problem solving, meeting facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • An ability to be flexible and/or an ability to be comfortable with a certain level of ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information effectively and confidentially.
  • Ability to represent the agency to persons outside the organization and to interact with all staff in a professional, courteous, culturally sensitive, and tactful manner.
